Selous National Park
Africa’s Largest Game Sanctuary, with an area of 45,000 square kilometers, the Selous Game Reserve is the largest uninhabited protected area in Africa.
The Reserve derives its name from hunter – explorer Frederick Countenary Selous. A keen naturalist and conservationist and hunter, Selous was killed in the First World War in the Behobeho region of the Reserve.
Accessibility and Facilities
Train
One can get to the northern sector by train. The Tanzania Railway (TAZARA) passes through the northern edge of the Reserve. There are return trips twice a week and it takes about four hours to reach Matambwe Station where a visitor can be taken by vehicle to their prearranged camp.
Air
The air at Mtemere Mbuyu ,Behobeho,Stiegler’s Gorge, Kibambawe and Mbuyuni can be reached within one hour from Dar es Salaam by light charter air craft. When the weather is favorable.
And, of course, a visitor to the Reserve may elect to reach there by road.
